50cc Mopeds Frequently Asked Questions Podcast

As the mopeds are becoming more popular here, we’re getting a lot of questions that people want answers to before they’re ready to go ahead and buy.  We’re finding that a lot of these questions, mainly about 50cc mopeds but also about 125cc mopeds, are coming up time and time again.

So, instead of making a massive list of them all and expecting you to read through it, what we decided to do was make a podcast – a sort of 50cc mopeds FAQ podcast – to save you reading.

If you have any questions about these bikes or about buying them online etc., you’ll probably find the answers in the podcast.  But, if you don’t, or if you can’t or don’t want to listen to Michael’s voice, you can ask your question by clicking the contact link at the top of the page.  Usually we’ll get an answer to  you within a few hours.

Anyway, on with the podcast – here’s the link:

    Hi,

At 16 can you only ride a 50cc moped or can it be any 50cc bike? If I just take money out of the equation and say I was after the Aprilia RS50, 50cc as the mopeds are, is that still legal since it too is 50cc, although not a scooter? Also I think but am not sure that all 16 year olds can not ride faster than 30mph, so is buying the RS50 ok if you stick to 30mph or even if you have it legally restricted to 30mph. Then once you turn 17 can you then get it unrestriced?

There the sorts of answers I was after so any help would be great.

    Many thanks, Dan

    Hello Dan

    Thanks for your message.

Basically, until aged 17 you can only ride a 50cc moped in the UK that is restricted to 50kph or about 30mph. Here’s the formal definition of a moped: A moped is defined as a vehicle that must not exceed 30mph, weigh more than 250kg or have an engine over 50cc.

So it’s not really the type of bike but rather its weight, engine size and speed. It’s unfortunately not enough to stick to the speed yourself; the bike has to be only capable of that speed whether by design or legally restricted.

Hope that helps. Any more questions, just let me know.

    Regards

    Michael
